Australia’s squad for the upcoming window in October has been revealed, with some new faces joining the squad alongside plenty of familiar faces.
There are three players who are uncapped at senior level that have been called up into this squad – Tori Tumeth, Courtney Newbon and Hana Lowry.
This call up caps off a pretty big year already for Tumeth, who has moved to Vancouver Rise in Canada’s Northern Super League and really made her mark already, scoring a few times and also captaining the team on a number of occasions.
Lowry has also had a big few months, with the midfielder making the move to Vålerenga in Norway after the most recent A-League Women’s season, and even scoring on her debut for the side.
Newbon’s inclusion comes off the back of a strong A-League Women’s season which saw her win the Goalkeeper of the Year award in the league.
There are also several returning faces to the squad that have not previously been called up this calendar year.
Alexia Apostolakis has earned a first call up since the June/July window of last year, and it comes off the back of captaining the Young Matildas in the recent U20 Asian Cup and a strong season in the A-League Women’s that saw her secure a move to Bristol City in England’s WSL2 competition.
Daniela Galic is back in the squad after a strong season thus far in Sweden, and returns to the squad for the first time since the SheBelieves Cup in early 2025.
Fan favourite Charli Grant is also back in the squad for the first time since October 2025, and after a few tough years playing for Tottenham Hotspur in England is now flying for Malmö FF in Sweden.
There are also a few big names missing from this squad, with Alanna Kennedy and Charli Rule not named because of injury and Kyra Cooney-Cross not named for personal reasons.
Speaking to the media this afternoon about the announcement, Matildas coach Joe Montemurro spoke about what he hopes to achieve with the team this window and how bringing in those new players may help with that.
“I think we’re approaching it basically from from the point of view that we’ve stabilised the way we want to play” Montemurro explained.
“We’ve stabilised the ideas that we think are our base, and what we now need to do is start to introduce a couple of other things that we could be challenged with in the tournament, and that’s maybe tinkering with a little bit of system, tinkering with a little bit of design of structure with the ball, a little bit of design of structure without the ball.
“We just want to make sure that we cover all our bases with the players that we bring in that are able to have the profile to do these little adjustments that we need to.”
