For the first time in A-League Women’s history Adelaide United and Perth Glory have played each other to a nil all draw today at ServiceFM Stadium.
The game presented itself as a real arm wrestle between the two sides, especially in regards to breaking down defences. At the final whistle, 47 tackles had been recorded between the two teams.
After a perfectly tepid first half, both sides came out of the change rooms with a little more fire behind their eyes, the home side especially.
Adelaide enjoyed a slew of chances against Perth, coming from its captain Adriana Taranto, Chelsea Dawber, and late substitute Emilia Makris. Each opportunity was either denied by Glory keeper Alyssa Dall’Oste, or in Makris’ case, sent over the bar due to good pressure from Perth’s central defenders.
Ilona Melegh between the sticks for Adelaide had a good showing throughout the 90 minutes, making a number of interventions to maintain the sides’ clean sheet.
Perhaps one of the most entertaining moments of the game was when a challenge against the Glory’s Clancy Westaway saw her do a somersault and pop right back up to be awarded a free kick.
Adelaide United will travel for round three to face the Central Coast Mariners, while Perth will play its first home game of the season in the distance derby, facing Wellington Phoenix.
